The Antonov An-225 Mriya was a large strategic airlift cargo aircraft designed and built by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Soviet Union. Originally developed in the 1980s as an enlarged version of the Antonov An-124 for transporting the Buran spacecraft, it made its first flight on December 21, 1988. Only one aircraft was completed, although a second fuselage with a slightly different configuration was partially constructed. After a brief period serving the Soviet space program, the aircraft was retired in the early 1990s. Around the turn of the century, plans were made to refurbish and reintroduce the An-225 for commercial use, carrying oversized payloads for Antonov Airlines. Several announcements mentioned the possibility of completing the second fuselage, but progress was stalled due to funding issues. By 2009, it was reported that about 60-70% of the work was done. With a maximum takeoff weight of 640 tons, the An-225 set several records, including being the heaviest aircraft ever built and having the largest wingspan of any operational aircraft. It was often used to transport items previously thought impossible to move by air, such as 130-ton generators, wind turbine blades, and diesel locomotives. Both Chinese and Russian officials also announced plans to adapt the An-225 for their space programs. The Mriya gained worldwide fame for its size and uniqueness, capturing the public’s imagination.
