Now, a bit of history about the legendary 1206:
The International Harvester (IH) 1206 Farmall was a groundbreaking row-crop tractor produced from 1965 to 1967. It was notable for being the company's first turbocharged tractor and the first to exceed 100 horsepower. Its release marked a turning point for International Harvester, helping the company recover from a tough period and establishing its reputation for powerful, innovative farm equipment. The 1206 was also available in International Standard and Wheatland versions.
History and significance:
First turbocharged Farmall: The IH 1206 Farmall was equipped with a factory-installed turbocharger, a major engineering advancement at the time that increased its power.
First over-100 horsepower: It was the first row-crop tractor on the market to surpass 100 horsepower, providing farmers with more power for demanding tasks like plowing.
Distinctive design: The 1206 featured a striking red and white paint scheme and a “Turbo” decal on the hood to highlight its advanced engineering.
Addressing the tire challenge: Originally scheduled for release in 1964, prototypes produced so much power that they tore the tires from the rims. The release was delayed until 1965 while more durable tires were developed.
Specifications:
Engine: IH DT361 6-cylinder liquid-cooled turbocharged diesel engine.
Displacement: 361 cubic inches (5.9L).
Horsepower (PTO): 112.64 hp.
Horsepower (drawbar): 95.00 to 99.16 hp.
Transmission: 8-speed unsynchronized with an optional 16-speed partial powershift (TA).
Weight: Approximately 9,400 to 10,115 pounds.
Fuel capacity: 42 gallons.
Collectibility and restoration:
Highly regarded: Due to its innovative design and powerful performance, the IH 1206 Farmall is a highly sought-after vintage tractor.
Restoration resources: Its popularity ensures manuals and engine overhaul kits are still available from suppliers like Jensales and Yesterday’s Tractors.
Collectible toys: Replicas and die-cast models by companies like ERTL are also popular among collectors.
Used models: Used IH 1206 tractors can still be found for sale at equipment dealers and auction sites such as Machinery Pete and TractorHouse. As of October 2025, listings vary in price and condition based on hours, original parts, and restoration status.
