The 9S18M “Kupol-M” (“Snow Drift”) is a mobile 3D acquisition radar operating in the S band (IEEE designation) or F band (NATO designation). It features a rectangular phased array antenna with mechanical azimuth rotation and an electronically steered pencil beam in elevation. The radar’s waveform alternates between an unmodulated pulse and a pulse with linear intra-pulse frequency modulation (chirp). It can track up to 50 targets simultaneously and provide target designation for six of them. This radar is used for target assignment in the 9K37 “Buk” air defense missile system (Cyrillic: «??? ?1»; NATO designation: SA-11 “Gadfly”). Developed in 1977, it has been part of the armament of several former Soviet Union states and Finland since 1980.
