The M48 Chaparral is an American-made self-propelled surface-to-air missile system based on the M113 vehicle family. The MIM-72 missile is derived from the AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missile. The M48 entered service with the United States Army in 1969 and was phased out as the M48A2 between 1990 and 1998. It was designed to complement the M163 VADS, which covers short-range, quick engagements, with the Chaparral providing longer-range defense.
