The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 (Russian: NATO reporting name: Fishbed) is a supersonic fighter and interceptor aircraft developed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau in the Soviet Union. Its nicknames include "Balalaika," due to its wing shape resembling the stringed musical instrument of the same name; "O?ówek," which is Polish for "pencil," because of the shape of its fuselage; and "Én B?c," meaning "silver swallow" in Vietnamese. Around 60 countries across four continents have operated the MiG-21, and even seven decades after its first flight, it remains in service with many nations. It set numerous aviation records, becoming the longest-produced supersonic jet in aviation history, the longest-produced fighter aircraft since the Korean War, and previously, the longest-produced fighter aircraft overall.
