Borrowing and repaying in the finances menu operate in fixed increments of 5,000. Hold Shift to borrow or repay 50,000 at once, or hold Ctrl for 500,000. The button labels display the current step size while the key is held. You will never borrow more than your credit limit, nor repay more than your debt or what you can afford.
