WORK IN PROGRESS This mod is under heavy development. Expect rough edges, incorrect engine data on some vehicles, and changes between versions. Single player only. Back up your savegame before trying it. Bug reports and corrections in the comments are appreciated. Real Exhaust Smoke replaces the game's exhaust effect with a simulated diesel engine that breathes, warms up, wears out, and smokes like a real one. Each vehicle — base game, DLC, and most mods — gets its own engine: displacement, cylinders, turbo, era, condition. What it does Smoke that means something. Black under load and turbo lag, white when cold, blue when overfilled with oil or worn rings, faint grey behind a DPF. A classic mechanical-pump tractor smokes on every pull-away; modern engines with smoke limiters, VGT, and DPF barely do. The amount depends on engine size and air intake. Hear the turbocharger. Spool, wastegate, variable vanes, surge on downshift, blow-off on lift-off, a whine that rises with shaft speed. The vehicle’s own turbo sound can be muted so the mod’s sound is heard. Temperatures. Coolant, oil, engine block, manifold, exhaust, and charge air with a thermostat, viscous fan clutch, ram air, sun, wind, and coolant heater — parked vehicles keep cooling while you’re away, so a tractor left out overnight starts cold. Cold engines. Glow-plug preheat, longer cranking, rough idle with clatter, white haze, less power until warm. Warm-up aids: coolant heater (Webasto) Ctrl+Alt+R, high idle Ctrl+Alt+T, plug-in block heater Alt+I. The Webasto burns diesel and drains the battery. Electrical system. Battery charge, alternator, regulator voltage, lights, beacons, wipers, and heater as loads. Leaving lights on will cause slow or no engine start. Condition and maintenance. Engine oil, coolant, filters, battery, injectors, turbo, rings, cooling system, DPF ash, and glow plugs wear with hours and abuse — lugging, cold starts, overheating, hot shutdowns. Service in the workshop (Engine service button); the vehicle’s damage level reflects engine condition — or revert to the game’s own wear system; never both simultaneously. An initial prompt can sync an older vehicle’s hour meter. Oil. Check the dipstick (Alt+O); buy oil in the shop (hand tools) and top up the sump — holding too long burns excess oil as blue smoke. Engine feel (optional, four levels). The engine’s sound varies with cold and rough running, idle hunting, high idle, quick revs, and a physical power level indicating how much air the engine actually gets. HUD. Compact or full engine readout, analog gauges (boost, water, oil pressure, EGT, ammeter), battery meter, speedometer icons, and the vehicle’s temperature gauge. A heat haze appears above hot exhaust. All settings are optional and adjustable in the Ctrl+Alt+W window, globally and per vehicle. Vehicle configuration ? Manual allows you to set aspiration, cylinders, displacement, boost, turbo size, intercooler, era, boost control, smoke limiter, DPF, and voltage. Vehicle database The mod includes engine data for every base game vehicle, the Daimler Truck, Plains & Prairies, MacDon, and World’s Fastest Tractor DLCs, plus about 400 mod vehicles. Other vehicles are estimated based on the game’s motor figures, with initial estimates pre-filled in the window, which can be corrected and saved. Keys Ctrl+Alt+W: Open settings window anywhere (also for the current vehicle) Ctrl+Alt+R: Toggle Webasto coolant heater Ctrl+Alt+T: Toggle high idle Alt+I: Turn on/off plug-in block heater Alt+O: Check dipstick; hold with oil can in hand to top up Known limits Single player only. Engine state is not synchronized in multiplayer. Engine data for mod vehicles is maintained manually; some entries are estimates or incorrect. Set to Manual and correct as needed, then comment with vehicle name and correct data. The game’s exhaust effect is muted; the mod’s particles replace it. Vehicles with unrealistic power/rpm are modeled based on air intake (HUD indicates so). Oil can model: “Oil Can” by Nitropunch, CC BY 4.0. Turbo sounds derived from various sources, all others synthesized. *Mod by Joi59, built with Claude. BETA 3 Major updates since 0.3.0.0: - Replaced load-driven smoke with a physical engine model (air, fuel, turbo, heat, electrics). - Condition, maintenance, and workshop service; oil level, dipstick, and oil can. - Cold running, engine feel, warm-up sounds for turbo, fan, clatter, and heater. - Vehicle database (base game, DLC, 400 mod vehicles), first-entry prompt, settings window. - HUD readouts, analog gauges, dashboard icons, and heat haze.
