The Mercedes-Benz 1017 is a series of medium-duty "New Generation" (NG) cab-over trucks widely used for military and commercial purposes since the late 1970s. The model designation "1017" indicates the truck's specifications: "10" for a maximum gross weight of approximately 10 tonnes, and "17" for an engine power of roughly 170 horsepower (specifically 172 hp). The "A" (1017A) models feature selectable all-wheel drive, known in German military terms as tmil gl (teilmilitarisiert geländegängig), meaning "partially militarized, cross-country capable." Technical specifications include a Mercedes-Benz OM 352 A engine—a water-cooled, 6-cylinder inline turbocharged diesel with a displacement of 5,675 cc, producing 127 kW (172 hp) at 2,800 rpm and torque of 540 Nm at 1,600 rpm. It has a pneumatically synchronized 5-speed manual transmission and is available in 4×2 or 4×4 configurations. The trucks are typically over 7 meters long (e.g., 7.14 m) and can carry about 5.4 tonnes. They can wade through water up to approximately 500 mm deep. The German Bundeswehr began procuring the 1017 and 1017A series in 1977, with a total of around 22,000 units delivered. Designed primarily as commercial vehicles with minimal modifications, they served in various roles such as cargo and personnel transport, communication shelters, fuel tankers, NBC detection vehicles, and fire-fighting units. The cab features a short steel design with three seats, with the middle seat foldable for a gunner to operate a roof hatch. Rear windows were often replaced with storage compartments for personal equipment. Many units have enjoyed long service lives, and thanks to their simple mechanics and reliability, they are frequently refurbished and repurposed for civilian uses like overland expeditions, cranes, or dumpers.
