The AS-90 (Artillery System for the 1990s) is a lightly armored self-propelled artillery piece used by the British Army, first introduced in 1993. Its official designation is the 155 mm Gun Equipment L131.
Overview and Development
The AS-90 was designed and built by the Armaments division of Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering (VSEL), which is part of BAE Systems. Between 1992 and 1995, VSEL supplied 179 units at a total cost of £300 million. It replaces the 105 mm FV433 Abbot SPG, the 155 mm M109 SPG, and the 155 mm FH-70 towed gun. Currently, it is operated by five regiments of the Royal Horse Artillery and the Royal Artillery: 1 RHA, 3 RHA, 4 Regt RA, 19 Regt RA, and 26 Regt RA.
