The Sukhoi Su-25 “Grach” (Russian: ??-25 NATO designation: Frogfoot) is a single-seat, twin-engine aircraft developed in the Soviet Union by the Sukhoi Design Bureau. It is designed for ground attack, close air support, and anti-tank missions, providing vital support to the Soviet Ground Forces. In the Russian Air Force and Ground Forces, it is affectionately known as “Grach” (meaning “rook”). Over its more than forty years of service, the Su-25 has seen combat with numerous air forces worldwide. It played a significant role in the Soviet-Afghan War, conducting counterinsurgency missions against the mujahideen. The Iraqi Air Force used it during the Iran-Iraq War from 1980 to 1989. Many were destroyed or sent to Iran during the Gulf War in 1991. In 1993, Abkhazian separatists used the Su-25 against Georgian forces during the Abkhaz War. Eight years later, the Macedonian Air Force employed the Su-25 against Albanian insurgents in the 2001 conflict. In 2008, Georgia and Russia reportedly used Su-25 aircraft during the South Ossetia war. Several African countries, including Ivory Coast, Chad, and Sudan, have used the Su-25 against insurgent groups and civil conflicts. Recently, the Su-25 has been active in the Russian intervention in the Syrian civil war, the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
