The Camionetta AS 42 Type II “Metropolitana” 47/32 is the third variant in the Camionetta Desertica Model 42 family of light reconnaissance vehicles. The AS 42 (Africa Settentrionale = North Africa) was built on the same chassis as the AB 41 armored car but features a two-wheel drive system, specifically designed for desert operations and reconnaissance missions. Its development was driven by North African divisions' need for a long-range, highly maneuverable vehicle, similar to those used by the British Long Range Desert Group (LRDG). It could be equipped with a 20 mm Breda Model 35 autocannon, a 20 mm Solothurn S-18/1000 anti-tank rifle, or a 47 mm Breda Cannone da 47/32 Model 39 tank gun. The chassis was armored with 17 mm of steel, complemented by three 12 mm bulletproof glass plates for the windshield.
