The Achzarit is a heavily armored personnel carrier (APC) used by the Israel Defense Forces. It was developed by converting captured Soviet-made T-54 and T-55 tank hulls into personnel carriers. Technical and Operational Characteristics Origin and Design: The vehicle results from removing the original tank turret and significantly modifying the chassis to create a rear troop compartment. This conversion provides the vehicle with a high level of ballistic protection, far exceeding that of standard APCs. Armor and Protection: Designed specifically for urban warfare and high-intensity conflicts, the Achzarit is considered one of the most heavily armored APCs in existence. Its armor is built to withstand a wide range of anti-tank weapons. Capacity and Utility: Typically configured to carry a squad of infantry (usually up to 7 soldiers) along with a crew of 3. It features a rear ramp for troops to disembark under cover. Strategic Importance: The Achzarit was developed to address the vulnerabilities of lighter infantry fighting vehicles, enabling troops to move safely through combat zones that would be too dangerous for conventional armor.
